International City of Lyngby

SCL has launched a series of dialogues where we invite international citizens of Lyngby inside for a conversation about Life in Lyngby. The goal is to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to benefit from the city’s many offers, including advice regarding jobs, cultural events and leisure activities.

Today, more than 8,000 people with an international background live in Lyngby, which is 14% of the population. It is a well-known fact that Denmark is a difficult country to establish new friendships in, but that is not to say that Danes are not open to new acquaintances. As one of the participants puts it: “Usually, the Danes open the door to new relationships through work or children”.

For the international inhabitants of Lyngby their needs are diverse, but as the rest of society most individuals are often looking for a network, a community. It is often through this one also finds the answers to many practical everyday issues such as information about running and knitting clubs or the opportunity to work as a volunteer. A Microsoft employee had found his way to the local sailing club through a colleague, and in general, got all his questions answered through work colleagues.

Karen, Lise and May-Britt from resp. the municipality, the library and the volunteer center contributed to the conversation and informed about their role in society and the opportunities they each offer citizens from jobs, volunteering to book clubs.

The conversation continues after the summer break, but already now we are looking at various initiatives that can support a good life in Lyngby. If you have good ideas and want to contribute to the effort, we would love to hear from you.
