A vibrant university town

Science City Lyngby work to integrate education, research, business, housing, urban and commercial life in new and exciting ways to realize the vision of creating a vibrant university town and greater coherence between city, research, education, public and private initiatives.

Lyngby is one of the most attractive development areas in the Capital Region. All new projects share the Science City Lyngby vision and objectives. One such project focuses on developing the area around the DTU campus into a unique ‘Innovation District’. Additional areas are also being further developed, mainly in central Lyngby.

Developments

Our initiatives on commercial and urban development have so far contributed to the following:

• Lyngby Storcenter will renovate the hotel and expand into 200 rooms and a restaurant and skybar at the top floor, 2024-26.
• DTU plant 2.400 trees Nordstien through DTU Campus.
• Bruun Rasmussen Kunstauktioner move to Lyngby.
• Climate Challenge Lab being build at DTU, special focus on Power-to-X, opens in 2024.
• Classic Car a new museum, conference facility and hotel is being developed.
• H.C Ørsted gymnasium icon building, new technical highschool opened March 2022.
• Johannes Fog A/S  is building a new facility for their company, a new campus for Cphbusiness and youth housing, opens 2024.
• KAB is building community housing for families and young people close to DTU.
• Novo Nordisk Foundation opens a new national learning center in Lyngby, LIFE.
• Microsoft new headquarter in the center of Lyngby approx. 850 employees.
• Novozymes global innovation campus approx. 800 employees, next to DTU
• Aquaporin moved to a renovated building north of DTU
• NNE moved to Virum
• Basecamp built 675 student apartments in Sorgenfri
• DTU Science Park opened FutureBox – a deeptech acelerator and incubator.
• DTU built a new facility for student and staff entrepreneurship DTU Skylab.
• Hempel expands their HQ with a new campus for 200 knowledge workers.
• International student domicile for 312 students at Lyngby Campus

This development has led to an increased number of knowledge-intensive jobs, new businesses and closer cooperation between private companies, public authorities and science/education – a development which goes hand in hand with the Science City Lyngby’s strategy 2020-2025.

With the extensive development of the area around the DTU campus and the many exciting collaborations between the city and university, a unique ‘Innovation District’ adjacent to the university is developing. This close proximity to the university has, for example, played a role in the decision to build Novozymes’ new Innovation Campus in Lyngby. The many companies and business clusters around campus and in Lyngby build bridges across sectors and help to maintain DTU’s position as one of Europe’s leading technical universities.
