International primary school

Great interest in an international primary school

Background

There is a growing interest in establishing an international primary school with education in English in addition to the Danish primary schools in Lyngby-Taarbæk. The City of Knowledge and Urban Development has a coordinating role in this project, which is based on a broad interdisciplinary cooperation between relevant parties in Lyngby-Taarbæk.

A new legislation passed by the Danish Parliament in April 2015 now permits Danish municipalities to run public international schools, where the language of instruction is English. There is a great need for an international school in Lyngby-Taarbæk and the new legislation provides new opportunities. Both public and private partners are currently examining the challenges and potentials of establishing an international public school.

Survey about the need for an international primary school

Already in 2013, the City of Knowledge and Urban Development conducted an extensive questionnaire survey in cooperation with the market research agency Epinion concerning the need for an international primary school with education in English in Lyngby-Taarbæk. The survey was conducted among more than 500 international and Danish citizens and employees in Lyngby-Taarbæk and is one of the most extensive of its kind ever completed in Denmark.

The result of the survey showed that there is a great need for an international primary school with education in English in Lyngby-Taarbæk:

  • 50 % of the international respondents are prepared to enroll their children in an international primary school in Lyngby-Taarbæk. Two out of three respondents believe that Lyngby-Taarbæk will be a more attractive place to live if such an offer exists
  • 19 % of the Danish respondents are likely to enroll their children in an international primary school in Lyngby-Taarbæk. Three out of five believes that Lyngby-Taarbæk will be a more attractive place to live if such an offer exists
